Fairfax Media is open to forming an agreement with rival News Ltd in an effort to get readers to pay for online content, Fairfax chief Brian McCarthy said.

Well this really opens up a whole can of worms doesn't it.

It's not the first time I've heard such thoughts being floated mind you. I think there's a growing trend around the world where newspaper companies are feeling they are missing the opportunity for profit. But I think in reality people would just flock to the free sites. I really think any companies who try charging for their news is signing their own sites death warrant. This will be the prime opportunity for the free news sites to excel and grow their member base.
